Most melamine cyanurate fire retardants for nylon are more expensive than the base resin. Therefore, regardless of the cost of additional ingredients, most flame-retardant nylon is more expensive than pure nylon. The cost includes the amount of fire retardant to be added, the density of the finished product and the cost of all raw materials, as well as the processing cost. The relative cost of different additives may vary, depending on the specific flammability test and the required performance. Table 4-19 lists UL-94 grades and LOI of different fire retardant systems. Compared with red phosphorus, halogenated compounds, especially chlorinated compounds, obtained higher lo and higher LOI than melamine and its derivatives.

In recent years, due to the expansion of the scale of melamine cyanurate(MCA) production, the production cost of MCA has been reduced. Choosing to use MCA on the premise of meeting the performance requirements will not increase the cost. At present, the price of MCA in China is even lower than nylon. The consumption and manufacturers have increased rapidly in recent years, and have formed a strong competitiveness in the international market, including its downstream flame-retardant nylon and electronic and electrical connectors.
